Behind the retreat

The woman asking what it really means to be the change

Nearly ten years ago, I found myself living with a level of anxiety that had quietly become my normal.
I eventually reached a point where I could no longer ignore what was happening within me. That was when I began psychotherapy. Not long afterwards, I became a mother. Motherhood changed the questions I was asking.
Instead of wondering how to cope better, I began wondering whether I was living in a way that was true to who I was. I became curious about the beliefs I had inherited, the patterns I repeated without noticing, and the kind of life I wanted to create—not only for myself, but also for my children.
For years I asked who I could become. Only later came the deeper question – who am I beneath the roles, the expectations, and the stories about what makes a good woman?
A poster on my wall once said simply:
Be the change.
This retreat grew out of never being finished with what that truly means.
meeting Sister MorningStar

How the retreat came to life

I first met Sister MorningStar while studying in a programme dedicated to free birth and the observation of birth beyond the dominant medical model. The first time I heard her speak was during an online lecture that lasted almost four hours.
What stayed with me wasn’t only her knowledge, but the way she listened, and the respect she held for women and for life.
When she announced her 2026 European tour, an idea I had carried quietly for months finally found its moment. This retreat is the result.

Why we gather

One of the deepest convictions I hold is that something meaningful happens when women gather because there are very few places left where women can be fully present with one another without needing to perform, compete, explain themselves, or arrive with the right answers.
A women’s circle is not a workshop, nor is it simply a social gathering. It is a way of being together that asks very little of us except honesty, attention, and a willingness to listen.
To be seen exactly where you are, without needing to be different than you are in that moment, is a rare experience. To discover that your questions are shared by other women is often where something begins to shift.
Many of us have grown up without women who could show us what it looks like to live with ease rather than constant effort.
This retreat is not about rejecting the lives we have built. It is about making space to look at them with fresh eyes.

Who is this retreat for

This retreat is for women who feel drawn to better understand themselves and the different seasons of a woman’s life.
It is for those who are curious about the wisdom carried within the female body, about the transitions that shape us, and about the role that instinct plays in how we move through the world.
You do not need to be a mother, planning a pregnancy, or experienced with circles — only curious, and willing to spend four honest days with yourself, with nature, and with other women. Sister MorningStar shares insights from decades of working with women, on themes rarely spoken of yet touching us all.

What You Will Take Home

Rather than offering a fixed method or a set of conclusions, this retreat invites you into a different way of observing your own life.
Special Guest

Meet Sister MorningStar

For more than five decades, she has devoted her life to gathering women, preserving feminine wisdom, and protecting what she often calls the simple and sacred ways of birth. Her work has always extended beyond birth itself, embracing the great thresholds of a woman’s life – from our first blood to our final breath.

Born into Cherokee ancestry, Sister MorningStar lives in a small cottage surrounded by woodland in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. She is the mother of three daughters, a grandmother, a storyteller, and the founder of MorningStar Community, an international sisterhood that has welcomed women from around the world for more than twenty-five years.

She believes that women are the heartbeat of their families, their communities, and ultimately, of our world.
For the first time, Sister MorningStar will be joining us in Serbia to spend four days in an intimate circle of women.
It is a rare opportunity to learn from someone whose teachings have been shaped not only by theory, but by more than fifty years of lived experience.
„We still need our instinctive life. What continues to touch me about women is how many have been wounded in their instincts without even knowing it. It is difficult to recognise what we have never had.”

Our time together

Day 1
Monday, September 14
Arriving & Opening Circle

As we settle into the rhythm of the place, we will gather for our opening circle and take time to get to know one another.

From there, we begin exploring the first great thresholds of a woman's life.

Through conversation, storytelling, and shared reflection, Sister MorningStar will introduce the themes that will guide our time together: the journey from maiden to woman and mother, the instinctive nature of women, and the ways our instincts are shaped, protected, or wounded throughout life.

Evening

As night falls, we gather around the fire for our first evening circle, creating a space for the stories that are often left unspoken.

Day 2
Tuesday, September 15
A Womyn in Her Fullness

A day devoted to body, instinct, sensuality, sexuality, and spirituality - not as separate aspects of life, but as expressions of the same living intelligence.

Together we will explore what it means to inhabit our lives more fully and examine the cultural ideas that often shape our understanding of womanhood.

Evening

We return to the fire, where conversation continues beneath the open sky.

Day 3
Wednesday, September 16
Birth as a Threshold

Birth is often spoken about as a single event. During this day, we will explore it as something much larger: one of life's great thresholds, revealing how we meet uncertainty, surrender, trust, and transformation.

Whether or not you have given birth—or ever intend to—this conversation belongs to every woman. Through birth, we can learn something profound about the human experience itself.

Evening

Our final fire circle offers time to reflect on everything that has emerged over the previous days before we prepare to bring the retreat to a close.

Day 4
Thursday, September 17
Closing & Village Prenatal

Our final morning is dedicated to one of the most beautiful traditions Sister MorningStar carries with her: Village Prenatal.

Rooted in the ancient understanding that pregnancy belongs not only to a mother but to a community, Village Prenatal is a practice of gathering women to offer presence, blessing, encouragement, and practical support to those preparing to welcome new life.

Depending on the composition of our circle, we may also explore other community traditions that honour women at different thresholds of life, reflecting Sister MorningStar's belief that every woman deserves to be witnessed and supported during times of profound change.

We close the retreat with our final circle, taking time to acknowledge what we have received, what we are carrying home, and the relationships that have been formed over these four days.

The setting

The retreat will take place at Villa Garaši, a secluded house on the shores of Garaši Lake, at the foot of Mount Bukulja, just over an hour from Belgrade.
Surrounded by forest and water, the house offers the kind of quiet that is increasingly difficult to find. With no nearby neighbours and nature in every direction, it provides a setting where it becomes easier to slow down, notice what is happening within us, and give our full attention to the conversations we will share.
The villa accommodates a maximum of sixteen women, allowing us to remain a small and intimate circle throughout the retreat. Our main gathering space overlooks the garden and the lake, creating a beautiful place for conversation, storytelling, and shared practice.
During your stay, you will also have access to the swimming pool, sauna, and the outdoor kitchen, with plenty of time to rest between sessions, walk through the surrounding woodland, or simply sit by the water.
We chose this place with great care. The setting is not separate from the retreat as it is part of the experience itself.

Participants arrange their own travel.

Before the retreat begins, we will create a private group where everyone can connect, organise shared transport if they wish, and get to know one another before we meet in person.

If you would like to spread the cost, simply send us an email and we will gladly arrange a payment schedule with you.

Please bring comfortable clothing that allows you to move and relax with ease, a swimsuit for the pool and sauna, your personal toiletries, and any medication you may require.

Everything else will be waiting for you.

The entire retreat will be conducted in English.

All teachings and conversations with Sister MorningStar will be in English, so we recommend that participants feel reasonably comfortable understanding and communicating in the language.

Not at all.

Although birth, pregnancy, and motherhood are part of Sister MorningStar’s life’s work, this retreat speaks to the wider experience of being a woman.

Together we will explore instinct, belonging, community, ageing, the many thresholds of a woman’s life, and the ways we carry wisdom from one generation to the next.

Women are welcome in every season of life.

A 50% deposit is required to reserve your place.

As places are very limited, deposits are non-refundable in the event of cancellation.

An invitation

Perhaps you have read this far because something in these words feels familiar.

Over four days, we will make space for conversations that are rarely given enough time, for the stories women carry but do not always have the opportunity to tell, and for the quiet forms of wisdom that emerge when we slow down and pay attention.

There is no expectation that you arrive with experience, certainty, or even clear intentions.

Curiosity is enough.

If you feel drawn to join us, we would be delighted to welcome you into the circle.

Because the retreat is intentionally small, places are limited.

If you have any questions before registering, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’d be happy to hear from you.
